Co-Occurring Conditions at Discovery Addiction Services
Co-occurring conditions, also known as dual diagnosis, are a combination of a mental health disorder with a substance use disorder (SUD).
As complex as co-occurring conditions can be, they’re both treatable. Using a mix of proven addiction medicine and cutting-edge techniques, Discovery Addiction Services will help you address your problems and build a life you’ll be happy to call your own.
Substance Use Disorder
When does substance use become a problem?
It might be when it starts affecting your career. It might be when you start feeling horrible when you haven’t had a drink or used a drug for a while. Or it might be when you’re facing a judge after a night you can’t remember.
Everybody has a point when they realize they have a problem. The next step?
Deciding what to do about it. As devastating as addiction is, it’s a treatable condition. Discovery Addiction Services has years of successful experience treating substance use disorder (SUD)
and more.
Referring Patients to Discovery Addiction Services
Safety. Privacy. Healing. A second chance at life.
You want what’s best for your patients. As a behavioral healthcare professional, you understand that effective treatment is rarely one-size-fits-all. Each patient’s journey is unique, often requiring a nuanced, multidisciplinary approach that evolves over time.
At Discovery Addiction Services, we recognize the complexity of substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions, which is why we offer a robust continuum of care designed to meet patients exactly where they are clinically, emotionally and psychologically.
Alumni Programs
When you graduate from a drug treatment program, it’s common to feel a mix of emotions.
You’re proud of the work you did while in treatment. You’re excited about the potential for a new life free from substance use and addiction. And you might be a little nervous about what
comes next.
Our team at Discovery Addiction Services gets it. It’s normal to feel anxious at the prospect of reentering life after the structure of drug rehab. In response, we’ve carefully curated a robust alumni program that’ll act as YOUR companion once you leave our care.
Our program will:
- Connect you with others who share your struggles and goals
- Help build a support network
- Provide an alumni app and/or access to alumni social networking
- Offer you exclusive activities, including potlucks, outings and other fun events and more
Because nothing is as important as the rest of your life.
7 Reasons to
Choose Cliffside Malibu
Why choose the Cliffside Malibu addiction treatment center? The answer is simple. We want you to go to treatment once and recover for good. Below are the factors that set us apart from other treatment centers:
- We recognize the root cause of addiction as pain/trauma.
- We use the Stages of Change Model as the foundation for our psychologically based treatment.
- We use individualized, holistic therapies in conjunction with psychotherapy within a luxurious setting.
Your success is our success
Our main goal is that you come to treatment once – so that you go back into the world leading a happy, productive life.
We recognize the root cause of addiction as pain and/or trauma
Most treatment programs are 12-step based. While 12-step programs were cutting-edge 75 years ago, they do not address the underlying causes of addiction. At best, for those with trauma or abuse or neglect or many other forms of pain in their backgrounds, they are a bandage solution. We use 12 steps only as an adjunct to other forms of therapy.
You'll be immersed in the Stages of Change Model, the foundation of our treatment protocol
Dr. James Prochaska, creator of the Stages of Change Model and one of the world’s most quoted psychologists, has endorsed the treatment protocol.
You don’t have a disease, and we don’t believe or treat you as though you have one
When addiction is approached like a disease, the patient can feel demoralized by being told that they have an incurable illness from which people most often do not recover. The best that can be hoped for is management. We use a positive psychological approach that doesn’t focus as much on what is wrong with you, but on what is RIGHT with you. We use your assets to help them design lives they can be proud of.
We understand and use the neuroscience of addiction to help people recover
Remember that 12-step model, the one that tells you you’re powerless? That’s not the whole story. What research has proven is that while addiction affects the brain, the brain can be changed – both in its structure and chemistry – so that you really can change your life. But you have to be part of a treatment protocol that uses neuroscience to your advantage. You’ll get that support at Cliffside Malibu.
Experience individualized, holistic therapies in conjunction with psychotherapy
Everything at Cliffside is personalized for YOU. Every member of our team is invested in your recovery, whether you are getting treated for drugs, alcohol or a co-occurring disorder in which depression or anxiety is present. Detox and residential programming are offered to help meet you where you are in your treatment journey. You won’t simply go from one group to the next; you will be given access to literally every type of therapy – for mind, body and spirit – from yoga to meditation to mindset & interpersonal neurobiology therapy – to create a synergistic effect with your psychotherapy. These adjunctive efforts create the brain change that leads to lasting recovery.
Get five-star amenities with clinical excellence
When you are tackling the pain of addiction, you need a program that helps you feel safe, comfortable and provides treatment that truly works. Alongside evidence-based individual and group therapies, you will be surrounded by an environment that feels like home and more. You’ll have access to chef-prepared meals, gym workouts, yoga instruction, beach walks, and the option to have a private room. Our beautiful homes are serene and discreet, making this the ultimate setting to recover for life. In fact, 99% of former patients have reported that they can handle what happens in life after their stay at Cliffside Malibu.

What Are Some Common Addictions?
There are many different kinds of addictive substances. Here are a few of the more common ones we treat at Discovery Addiction Services:
Alcohol
It’s easy to forget that alcohol is one of the most widely available and addictive drugs there is. Alcohol abuse (which some call “alcoholism”) is a devastating form of addiction.
Cocaine
This powerful, illegal stimulant has been used as a party drug for decades despite being highly addictive. Crack is a crystallized and smokable version of cocaine.
Fentanyl
One of the most dangerous drugs there is, fentanyl is a very potent synthetic opioid that often contaminates other drug stashes. It’s also the drug that is largely responsible for the overdose epidemic.
Heroin
A powerful opioid drug, heroin has trapped people in addiction for decades and is infamous for the withdrawal effects it causes.
Marijuana / Cannabis
Increasingly legal, marijuana is considered a “softer” drug…but it’s still capable of disrupting your life every bit as much as the other drugs on this list can.
Methamphetamine
Meth is an extremely powerful stimulant that can cause you to lose contact with reality.
Prescription Drugs
Prescription drugs can allow a person to live a normal life when used correctly…but they can be devastating when abused. Prescription drugs are a large family of drugs that include ADHD medications, benzodiazepines and opioid pain relievers.
Synthetic Drugs
Often used as club drugs, drugs like MDMA, GHB, K2/spice and more can be highly unpredictable and dangerous.

What Are Co-Occurring Disorders?
Co-occurring disorders, sometimes called dual diagnosis, happen when a mental disorder accompanies a substance use disorder. One doesn’t necessarily cause the other. A person can self-medicate for a condition like depression; substance abuse can cause mental disorders in some cases.
Some common mental disorders that accompany addiction include:
Mood Disorders
These disorders affect the mood and include bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder.
Anxiety Disorder
Panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder cause people to feel extremely anxious and worried, often without good reason.
Trauma Disorders
Resulting from enduring a traumatic event, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the most well-known trauma disorder.
Personality Disorders
Disorders like borderline personality disorder strongly affect how a person sees themselves, others, and their world.
Co-occurring disorders can be very complex. As isolating as they can feel, they’re also surprisingly common – the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) estimates 21.5 million Americans have this
combination of disorders.
The good news is that co-occurring disorders are treatable. With years of successfully treating addiction and co-occurring disorders, we’ll help you safely explore the roots of your conditions and treat them effectively, helping you live the life you truly deserve.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a complex disease that involves the repeated use of drugs despite the problems it causes. Continuing to use cannabis despite being fired for showing up to work high, or continuing to drink despite multiple DUIs, are just a few of the ways SUDs affect people.
Some of the various clinical and holistic techniques we utilize include:
At its core, an alumni program fosters a sense of belonging. Participants are invited to stay connected with their peers and the center through regular events, support groups, volunteer opportunities and educational workshops.
